*Call to Worship

One: To God, we lift up our souls.

All: The reign of God is near!

One: God teaches us the way, and guides our paths.

All: The reign of God is near!

One: God strengthens our hearts; and helps us to abound in love.

All: The reign of God is near!

One: God’s justice and righteousness spring forth in our lives.

All: The reign of God is near!

One: Come, let us worship.

*Opening Hymn

O Sing a Song of Bethlehem” UMH 179

Opening Prayer

God of love and faithfulness, we thank you for all of the ways you come near to us. We have glimpsed your vision for creation as it breaks forth in our midst. Sometimes we see you transforming the world in powerful ways, like a roaring sea or a brightly shining sun. Other times, we can only glimpse you in leaves beginning to sprout, or branches beginning to spread. As we gather this day, we offer you our budding hopes so that your love might help them to grow. Amen.

*The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. The third day he arose from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the People

One: O Holy One, you are the source of all being; from you, all creation springs forth. Hear us this day as we pray for all parts of our family tree:

For those who have gone before us, who have given us the grounding that helps us hold fast to what is true:

All: We give you thanks, O God.

One: For the ones who reach up from the earth toward heaven, trusting you with all their heart that your promises of justice will not fail:

All: We give you thanks, O God.

One: For those who branch out, bringing together people and places in beloved community:

All: We give you thanks, O God.

One: For those who open up to the world like leaves, offering us their open hearts and their fierce and steadfast love:

All: We give you thanks, O God.

One: And God, we know there are those who feel like dead and brittle wood, who worry that all hope is dried up, who are so beaten and battered and burned by the world that they fear your promise of new life may not

be for them.

All: Have mercy on us, O God.

One: Have mercy on us. Hear us. Celebrate with us. And help us to remember that we are all part of your family tree. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
