Prelude – acolyte lights candles on altar

*Call to Worship

One: The voice of God is over the waters;

All: over the mighty waters, God speaks with creative power.

One: The voice of God breaks the cedars;

All: over the cedars, fire, wilderness, and forest, God speaks with authority.

One: Enthroned forever, may God bless the people with strength and peace!

All: Bless us with strength and peace.

One: Let us say, “Glory!”

All: Glory, glory, glory, God!

One: Come, Let us worship.

*Opening Hymn

Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters” UMH 605

Confession and Pardon

O holy and merciful God, we confess that we have not been obedient to your laws, nor been willing to seek and to do your perfect will. We have not loved you with all our heart and mind and soul and strength, neither have we loved our neighbors as ourselves. You have called to us in the need of our sisters and brothers, and we have passed unheeding on our way. In the pride of our hearts, and our unwillingness to repent, we have turned away from the cross of Christ,

and have grieved your Holy Spirit.

All offer prayers of confession in silence.

May almighty God, who caused light to shine out of darkness, shine in our hearts, cleansing us from all our sins, and restoring us to the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, in the face of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Opening Prayer

God of glory, open our hearts to receive Jesus, your greatest gift of love, again today. As we hear your voice and claim Jesus as your holy child, remind us that we too are claimed as children of God. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination (liturgist only)

Holy Spirit, open us to your possibilities and your promises. Help us hear, with fresh ears, the story of God’s definitive revelation in Jesus. May God’s voice speak to our hearts, dispel our fear, and call us by name. Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
